Imagine a scenario where a racer finds themselves at a crossroads, in desperate need of redemption. That’s exactly where Enea Bastianini stands as he approaches the MotoGP qualifying at Portimao this weekend.
In the previous race held at this scenic track in early 2024, Bastianini, riding for the esteemed factory Ducati team, secured pole position but ultimately finished the race in second place, just behind Jorge Martin. Fast forward to now, Bastianini is stepping back onto the track this weekend as a Tech3 KTM rider, and he must reclaim his qualifying prowess. This season has been challenging for him, as he has managed to qualify within the top ten only three out of his 19 races.
Currently, his average starting position is a disappointing 16th, and he has not been able to start any race higher than 17th in the last five rounds. However, there is a silver lining. In Malaysia, his potential was showcased when he brilliantly maneuvered from 19th place to finish in seventh—truly an impressive display of race pace!
Reflecting on his upcoming participation, Bastianini shared, "Heading into Portimao, we are buoyed by two strong performances in Australia and Malaysia." Notably, he shared the 2024 Portimao podium with fellow KTM rookie, Pedro Acosta. "Given that the KTM bike showed remarkable speed here last season, there is a sense of optimism for us. However, we recognize that our qualifying efforts need improvement. I’m hopeful that we can enhance our one-lap performance, aiming for a spot in either the second or third row on the starting grid—this could significantly ease our race strategy!"
Tech3 boasts a commendable history at Portimao, having celebrated a victory during the inaugural Portuguese MotoGP with local favorite Miguel Oliveira back in 2020. Additionally, Acosta achieved his first podium in the premier class at this venue last season. Team manager Nicolas Goyon remarked, "The Tech3 team holds unforgettable memories at this circuit, especially with Miguel Oliveira’s stunning win in the inaugural race and Pedro Acosta’s remarkable debut podium with us last season. Our bike has historically performed well here, and in 2024, we even had three KTMs finish in the top five. This fuels our belief that we possess the tools needed to compete at the top this year. Enea is entering this weekend in solid shape after two robust races, showcasing his determination to enhance his qualifying performance. Portimao could serve as the ideal backdrop for that comeback, especially since he clinched pole position here last year."
It's worth noting that with Maverick Vinales still on the mend from shoulder surgery, KTM's test rider Pol Espargaro will again be joining Bastianini in the Tech3 lineup this weekend, which adds an extra layer of intrigue.
Meanwhile, veteran journalist Peter, who has been covering the MotoGP scene for two decades, has witnessed legends like Valentino Rossi rise and fall. He’s deeply involved in the ongoing narratives, including the Suzuki team's exit and the complications surrounding Marc Marquez’s injuries.
But here’s where the conversation can spark some debate—given Bastianini's return and the recent adjustments within the team, can we expect a breakout performance this weekend, or will he continue to struggle in qualifying? We want to hear your thoughts! Do you agree or disagree with the optimism surrounding Bastianini's chances at Portimao?
