Singaporean public figures have taken to social media to endorse the PAP candidates for Punggol and Sembawang GRCs.
Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong's surprise deployment to Punggol has him leading the PAP team against the Workers' Party team helmed by senior counsel Harpreet Singh.
Minister for Health Ong Ye Kung will be leading his Sembawang GRC team to contest against opposition parties Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) and National Solidarity Party (NSP) in a three-cornered fight.
Former CEO of Temasek Holdings Ho Ching
Ho Ching, the former CEO of Temasek Holdings and wife of Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, rallied her support for DPM Gan via an Apr. 28 Facebook post.
Recognising DPM Gan a someone who "cares deeply," Ho shared how the Rare Diseases Fund was set up when he was the Health Minister.
She shared that it was difficult for MOH to "give a blank cheque" to help patients with rare diseases as costs would be high" and "better prioritised" for other healthcare needs that cover more people.
However, she added:
"Instead of doing nothing, he went around to lobby the community to step forward, and he could thus justify a 3:1 matching from the Ministry as a philanthropic programme.
And so the Rare Disease Fund was set up, with various generous donors coming forth to help, initially to cover four rare diseases. This was expanded to cover a more expensive fifth rare disease when one major new donor came forward."
Managing director of PeopleWorldwide Consulting, David Leong
The managing director of PeopleWorldwide Consulting, David Leong, also endorsed DPM Gan.
Leong, who is the former branch secretary of the PAP's Thomson division, took to Facebook to express his support for DPM Gan.
Leong said that he can "steer this ambition" of transforming Punggol, Sengkang, and Jalan Kayu into a "digital metropolis".
"The PAP has the institutional muscle, global networks, and proven execution to deliver a transformative smart city that boosts jobs, property values, and quality of life," said Leong.
In contrast, Leong said the WP "peddles a seductive but hollow narrative" where WP’s 2020 win in Sengkang "brought viral speeches but paltry progress".
"Don’t throw your vote away on protest tantrums — cast it for prosperity. Vote for action, not noise," he concluded.
Political scientist Bilveer Singh
Political scientist Bilveer Singh showed his support in a video posted onto X, formerly Twitter.
He said he was doing something that he has never done before in his adult life.
The associate professor at NUS said: "I'm fully and totally endorsing Mr Ong Ye Kung and his team in Sembawang GRC, as well as his compatriot in Sembawang West."
PAP's Poh Li San is contesting Sembawang West SMC against SDP's secretary-general, Chee Soon Juan.
The professor said that one of his reasons for endorsing Ong was that he's one of the few politicians in Singapore who comes from a political family, and has been involved in politics both directly and indirectly.
Saying that this is something "unique" that Ong brings to the table, Singh added that public interest is uppermost for Ong.
Singh said that Ong is a man "who has seen the political ups and downs and come out stronger".
Calling Ong "a man with a heart of gold", the political scientist said, "he is ample and well-endowed, but he decided to sacrifice his life, with the support of his family and his parents, for the nation."
Singh commented that Ong's capacity, capability, temperament, empathy, and ability to understand make him a "super individual" in the politics of Singapore.
Singh said he does not belong to any political party, but believes that voting for Ong's team for Sembawang GRC and Sembawang West SMC would be what's best for Singapore.
